About
Calvin Chen is a photographer based in the Pacific Northwest. His work has been exhibited at Blue Sky Gallery and Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art in Portland, Oregon, as well as Lightbox Photographic Gallery in Astoria, Oregon. Chen has consistently been juried into the pool of top 50 finalists in Photolucida's annual Critical Mass photo competition since 2014.
Chen's photographic practice emphasizes the poetry of the ordinary, exploring the beauty and significance found in everyday moments and inviting viewers to find depth in the seemingly mundane.
Recently drawn to the handcrafted processes of photogravure and chine collé, Chen finds that working with plates, inks, and papers creates a deeper connection to his images. The addition of chine collé adds layers of depth and embraces imperfection as an essential element of the work. Through these traditional printmaking techniques, he creates objects that invite contemplation and tactile engagement.
Chen's hope is that his work inspires reflection during uncertain times, offering viewers a space to pause and consider the profound within the familiar.
